HIRAM, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated Saturday (March 2) afternoon by Hiram College 10-3. With the loss the Pioneers fall to 0-4 on the season and with the win the Terriers improve to 1-2 overall.
Head Coach
Malory Brunett said, "Today just wasn't our day. We didn't come out like we should have in the first half and Hiram capitalized on our lack of intensity and silly mistakes."
Hiram opened the scoring four minutes into the game, but Marietta was able to answer a minute and a half later when
Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) scored off an assist from
Delaney Djuric (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), to tie the game at 1-1.
The Terriers scored five consecutive goals over the course of 16 minutes, and took a 6-1 edge into the final three minutes of the first half. With just under three minutes to play in the half, Millheim scored her second goal of the game off an assist from
Natalie Ackerman (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon McMillian). Hiram closed the half with back to back goals and entered the intermission ahead, 8-2
The second half got off to a quick start as the teams swapped a pair of goals with
Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) finding the back of the net for the Pioneers. The Terriers scored their final goal of the game at the 18:15 minute mark in the second half, to take a 10-3 edge.
Marietta held the Terriers scoreless for the final 18 minutes of the game. The defensive effort was led by Djuric,
Carlee Kernodle (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park), and
Emma Purington (Columbus, Ohio/Hamilton Township) as they each caused two turnovers in the game.
"Defensively we had a great second half, holding them to only 2 goals. But offensively we just couldn't produce the goals we needed to dig ourselves out of the deficit," added coach Brunett.
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) started and played the first half in goal for the Pioneers as she made five saves.
Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) played the final 30 minutes and made three second half saves. "Goalies
Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) and
Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) both played well, Maddie having five saves in the first half and Sam helped condense the lead in the second half," concluded Coach Brunett.
Marietta was led by Millheim as she scored a pair of goals, picked up three ground balls, and won a draw control. Stutler scored a goal, picked up a ground ball, and won a draw control.
Marietta will return to the field Wednesday (March 6) when they travel to take on Ohio Wesleyan University, with the game scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
