Pioneers drop road contest with Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Marietta College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University, 14-5 on Wednesday (March 6) at Shelby Stadium.  With the loss the Pioneers fall to 0-5 overall and the Battling Bishops improve to 3-1 on the season.  

The Battling Bishops opened the game ready to play as they scored the first nine goals of the game and led 9-0 with just over eight minutes to play in the half.  

The Pioneers got on the board with 6:51 minutes remaining in the half when Shelby Millheim (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom) found the back of the net on an unassisted goal.  Marietta held Ohio Wesleyan scoreless for the remainder of the half, and entered the intermission behind, 9-1.  

Maddie Leers (Crystal Lake, Ill. /Barrington) was in net for the Pioneers in the first half, as she faced 14 shots on goal, and made five saves.  

Marietta came out of the locker room ready to play as they opened the scoring in the second half when Millheim scored her second goal of the game.  After a Battling Bishops goal, Sarah Stutler (Park Hills, Ky./Notre Dame Acdemy) scored a free position goal to cut the Ohio Wesleyan advantage to 10-3.  

Ohio Wesleyan was able to rattle off three consecutive goals and made the scored 13-3 at the 15:42 mark of the second half.  

After a Battling Bishops goal make the score 14-3, the Pioneers answered with back to back goals and cut the lead to 14-5.  Millheim scored her third goal of the game, and Marietta's final goal was scored by Abbie Puchta (Blue Ash, Ohio/Loveland).  The goal by Puchta was the first of her career.  The Pioneers fell 14-5.          

Sam Mooney (New Cumberland, Pa. /Red Land) played the second half in the goal for the Pioneers as she faced 11 shots on goal and made six saves.  

Marietta was led by Millheim as she scored three goals, and a game high seven ground balls, three draw controls, and a pair of caused turnovers.  Stutler pitched in with a goal and a pair ground balls.  Puchta added a goal and a ground ball pick up for the Pioneers.     

Marietta will be back in action Wednesday (March 13) when they travel to battle with North Carolina Wesleyan, with the game scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
