KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Marietta College softball team was swept by the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, and the University of Dubuque on its final day in Florida, Saturday (March 16). The Pioneers fell to the Pointers, 8-5 and dropped the second game to the Spartans, 7-5. Marietta returns home from its spring break trip with a record of 7-5.
Game one started when Steven Point scored a run in the top of the first. The Pointers added four runs in the third and tacked on three in the sixth to take an 8-0 lead.
Marietta rallied in the bottom of the sixth with five runs.
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) lead off the inning with a single and
Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) walked to put runners on first and second.
Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley),
Megan Gummere (Granville, Ohio/Granville), and
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) all hit an RBI single to make the score 8-3.
Later in the inning, an
Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) single loaded the bases and
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) reached on an error and plated Gummere. Alderson scored the final run of the inning when she scored on a wild pitch, to cut the Stevens Point lead to 8-5. The rally fell short and the Pioneers fell, 8-5 in game one.
The Spartans jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning of game two.
Marietta answered back to tie the game in the top of the second when
Britnee Kail (Dover, Ohio/Dover) singled to drive in Tom, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
After a scoreless third the Pioneers took the lead when Kail singled into center field and Tom came into score on a throwing error by the centerfielder, to put Marietta on top 2-1 in the fourth inning.
Dubuque responded with a run to tie the game at two runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Marietta regained a 3-2 lead in the top half of the fifth when Tom singled down the left field line to drive in Kirk, who led off the inning with a single. The Pioneers added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.
Taylor Watts (Galloway, Ohio/West Jefferson) came around to score the first run when
Ashley Tschudy (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) bunted for a single. Kail scored the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to center off the bat Kirk, to put Marietta on top 5-2.
The Spartans rallied with a five run bottom of the sixth, to take a 7-5 edge. Dubuque held on to win the game, 7-5.
Marietta will return to the diamond Wednesday (March 20) when they travel to battle Washington and Jefferson College with game one scheduled for 3 p.m.
