HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Marietta College women's tennis team lost two matches in the Spring Tennis Fest. The Pioneers fell to Wisconsin Lutheran by the score of 6-3 on Wednesday (March 13) and to Stockton by the score of 9-0 on Thursday (March 14). Marietta is now 2-5 on the season.
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) accounted for two of Marietta's three team points against Wisconsin Lutheran (8-8 overall). Thompson beat Reebee Ratkowski at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-3. She partnered with
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) at No. 2 doubles and defeated Katarina Volkmann and Ratkowski, 8-2.
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) claimed MC's other point at No. 2 singles. Warvell topped Hannah Gerbing, 6-4 and 6-4.
At No. 1 doubles, Amanda Wietrzny and Gerbing beat
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and Warvell, 8-2. Natalee Douangvilay and Amanda Las won at No. 3 doubles by default.
With only five players in the lineup, Marietta also defaulted at No. 6 singles. In the top singles match, Wietrzny defeated Nelson, 6-1 and 6-2. At No. 4, Douangvilay beat Grim, 6-3 and 6-3, while Volkmann bested
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) at No. 5, 6-3 and 6-0.
Stockton (10-5 overall) swept the doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Maria Ibarra and Emily Steinberg topped Nelson and Warvell, 8-4. Taylor Searles and Renee Wornowicz slipped past Grim and Thompson at No. 2, 9-8 (7-2), while Hailey Johnson and Sarah Richardson picked up the win at No. 3 by default.
Ibarra blanked Nelson at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 2, Steinberg was a 6-4, 6-0 winner against Warvell. Brooke Samuels topped Thompson at No. 3, 6-2, 3-6 and 1-0 (10-8). At No. 4, Brenna Samuels bested Grim, 6-2 and 6-1, while Wornowicz defeated Haas at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-3. The Pioneers defaulted the No. 6 singles match.
Marietta wraps up play in the Spring Tennis Fest on Friday (March 15) with a 4 p.m. match against Nazareth College.
