UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball team was defeated by John Carroll University, 70-48 on Saturday (Dec. 7) afternoon. The win improves the Blue Streaks to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, and the loss drops the Pioneers record to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.
"We really struggled to get into a rhythm on offense today against their pressure. Our rebounding wasn't where we needed it to be," said Head Coach
Kole Vivian. "Credit to John Carroll, they are a really tough team to match up with. I liked how we competed better after our slow start."
John Carroll opened the game strong with a quick 8-0 run that spanned the first three minutes of the game.
Devin Hefner (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) halted the run for Marietta with a layup. The Blue Streaks continued their strong play with a 12-2 run that saw them take a 20-4 edge with just over three and a half minutes to play in the opening quarter. John Carroll entered the second quarter ahead, 25-13.
The Blue Streaks carried their momentum over to the second quarter and led, 34-16 three minutes into the quarter. The Pioneers fought back when
Kate Liston (Little Hocking, Ohio/Warren Local) knocked down a three pointer and a hit a jumper on back to back possessions, to trim the lead to 34-21. John Carroll closed the half strong and led, 41-25 at the intermission.
Marietta trimmed the Blue Streaks lead to 43-31 with an 8-0 run to open the third quarter. The run was propelled by back to back basket from
Alexis Enochs (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye), and capped by a layup from Hefner. John Carroll stretched out its lead behind an 8-2 run that gave them a 50-33 lead. The Blue Streaks closed the third quarter with a 58-37 edge.
The Pioneers battled for the entire fourth quarter, but John Carroll was able to halt any runs Marietta attempted to mount. The Blue Streaks closed out the game, and won 70-48.
The Pioneers were led by Enochs as she scored 12 points and pulled down three rebounds. Hefner pitched in with 10 points and a block in the game.
Marlo Taylor (Kimbolton, Ohio/Cambridge) led the team in rebounds with five in the game.
Marietta will return to the hardwood Saturday (Dec. 14th) when they host Baldwin Wallace University at 3 p.m.
