MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was defeated 5-0 by 21st ranked Otterbein University on Wednesday (Oct. 9) evening. With the win the Cardinals improve to 9-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) and the loss drops the Pioneers to 6-5-1 overall and 0-2 in OAC play.

Sean Kaighin said, "We've found ourselves up against another giant in the OAC who is very athletic and talented. Give credit when it is due, Otterbein is a good squad. We need to improve our physicality and willingness to compete in games like these."
Otterbein opened the scoring in the 17th minute of the match when Regina Severance scored a rebound goal off of a corner kick. 15 minutes later the Cardinals tacked on a second goal increased their lead to 2-0. Otterbein capped the first half scoring with a goal in the closing seconds of the half, to take a 3-0 edge into the intermission. Marietta's best opportunities to score came off of shots by
Sienna Ahlers (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos) and
Jasmine Hauser (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).
The Cardinals notched a pair of goals in the second half as one came on a penalty kick and the other was an unassisted goal. Otterbein's second half goals were both scored by Bella Shively. The Pioneers best chance to score in the second half came when
McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) hit the cross bar in the 61st minute of the match.
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) played a majority of the game in goal for Marietta and made 10 saves.
Karlee Bruns (Cambridge, Ohio/Cambridge) finished the match in goal and made a pair of saves.
The Pioneers will return to the field Saturday (Oct. 12) when they host Heidelberg University on Homecoming.
