Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer ties Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team tied the University of Mount Union, 1-1 on Wednesday (Oct. 23) evening on Marietta Field.  The draw puts the Pioneers record at 7-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, and the Purple Raiders are now 5-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in OAC action.

Head Coach Sean Kaighin said, "We're certainly not satisfied with the end result; however, we believe our ladies have played some of the best soccer in our last two games.  This is crunch time as we near playoffs, and our girls are determined to be in that top six."

Marietta wasted little time taking the lead, as they opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the match.  The Pioneers took a 1-0 advantage when McKenzie Dorr (Nashport, Ohio/Tri-Valley) served a corner kick into the box and Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) headed the ball into the back of the net.  The goal by Huffman is her first of the season.

The Marietta College back line of Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central), Huffman, France Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples), and Amelia Thompson (New Castle, United Kingdom/Monkseaton) made the 1-0 lead hold up to enter the half.  Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) anchored the defense from the goal, as she made one save in the first half.

Mount Union came out of the intermission ready to play, and scored the lone goal of the second half to tie the game at 1-1.  The Purple Raiders goal was scored by Sara Thomas in the 47th minute of the match.  The Pioneers created numerous chances to break the 1-1 tie when Chloe Williams (Dresden, Ohio/Tri-Valley), Augustyniak, and Moise all had shots on goal.  Regulation ended in a 1-1 draw and the teams entered extra time.

The first and second overtime periods were scoreless, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.  The overtime was evenly matched, as each team tallied three shots.  Taylor Carr (Charleston, W.Va./St. Albans) provided Marietta with the best opportunity to score, as she had the only shot on goal in the second overtime.

Conkle played the entire game in goal for the Pioneers, she faced 14 total shots, five of which were on goal and made four saves.

Marietta will return to the field Saturday (Oct. 26) when they host John Carroll University on Senior Day, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
