Men's Soccer earns 1-1 draw at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Marietta College and the University of Mount Union battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw Wednesday (Oct. 23) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer. The Pioneers move to 7-7-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the OAC. Mount Union is 8-2-4 overall and 2-1-3 in the OAC.

"I'm proud of the boys tonight. I'm not sure people realize how hard Mount is to play," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "We took their best shot in the first half, survived and then used halftime to regroup. I thought the second half was more representative of the fight we have."

Mount Union grabbed the early lead scoring off a corner kick in the 13th minute. Jon Schroeder sent the corner in to the near post where Austin Overy headed it in for his first goal of the season.

Marietta got the equalizer just over eight minutes into the second half. Caden Ferguson (Mars, PA./Mars Area) won a scramble inside the six-yard box beating a pair of Mount Union defense. He managed to slot the ball inside the far post to level the match, 1-1. The goal was Ferguson's third of the season.

"Sure, we wanted three points but to come away with something at Mount for the first time since I've been coach allows us to stay in the hunt," Bergin said. "This team will keep fighting. I can assure you of that."

Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) went the full 110 minutes in goal for Marietta and recorded six saves. Zach Hlas has two saves in goal for Mount Union.

Marietta travels to University Heights on Saturday (Oct. 26) for a 7 p.m. match at No. 8 John Carroll University.
