UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — No. 8 John Carroll University scored on an early penalty kick propelling the Blue Streaks to a 2-0 win Saturday (Oct. 26) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference play. The loss drops Marietta to 7-8-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the OAC. John Carroll improves to 13-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the OAC.
"We got beat by a very good team tonight. Take nothing away from JCU, they deserved this win," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "As a coach I take the responsibility for not preparing our guys well enough to deal with what we saw tonight. We need to keep working as the playoff chase continues Wednesday."
Marietta was whistled for a foul inside the box just over three minutes into the game. John Carroll's William Turrittin converted the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.
The Blue Streaks fired off a barrage of shots in the first half but the majority of them were way off target, JCU took 15 shots, only three on goal, to one for the Pioneers. The score remained 1-0 at halftime.
John Carroll extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 71st minutes. William Grubbs scored his first goal of the season with an assist from Justin Brown.
Connor Robinson went the distance in goal for John Carroll posting two saves and earning the shutout.
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) had five saves in 90 minutes in goal for Marietta.
Marietta returns home to host rival Muskingum University on Wednesday (Oct. 30). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
