COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team was defeated by Capital University, 3-0 on Wednesday (Oct. 16) evening. The win improves to the Crusaders record to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play and with the loss the Pioneers fall to 7-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.
Head Coach
Sean Kaighin said "We had a disappointing first half performance that put us too far behind to catch up. Our ladies responded at the break though, and did well to increase their tempo and physicality in the second half. We'll review the film, learn from our mistakes, and aim for a much better result on Saturday."
Capital wasted little time as they opened the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute of the match when Jordan Ficke scored an unassisted goal. The Crusaders tacked on a second goal a minute later when Allyssa Kimbler scored on a penalty kick. Capital took a 3-0 lead in the 42nd minute of the match when Hillary Counts scored off an assist from Aaliyah Brletic.
The second half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Marietta back line of
Amanda Augustyniak (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central),
France Moise (Naples, Fla./Naples),
Jorden Stuart (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne), and
Brooke Huffman (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) kept the Crusaders off the score sheet.
Katie Conkle (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) anchored the defense in goal, as she notched five second half saves. The Pioneers best opportunities to score in the half came on shots by
Kayla Tomlin (Sardinia, Ohio/Eastern) and
Theresa LaGreca (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial).
Marietta will return to the field Saturday (Oct. 19) when they travel to play Wilmington College, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
