TIFFIN, Ohio — Freshman
Caden Ferguson (Mars, PA./Mars Area) scored the lone goal of the match leading Marietta College over Heidelberg University Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The Pioneers improve to 6-6 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. Heidelberg slips to 2-8-1 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.
"The boys come away with a hard-fought win over a determined, well coached Heidelberg side. Our performance today was more like what we know we can do," Marietta head coach
Joe Bergin said. "While the field was tough to play on, we adapted and gutted out a road win. I was particularly pleased with our second half performance and our goal from Caden was brilliant. We look forward to getting back on the blue turf this week after a couple of road games."
Ferguson scored in the 72nd minute with an assist from
Dave Beattie (Russell, Ohio/West Geauga). Ferguson fired a shot from the top right corner of the 18-yard box and placed the ball inside the far post for the game winner.
The first half was pretty evenly matched as Marietta took five shots and Heidelberg had four shots. Each team had one corner kick in the first 45 minutes.
Marietta turned up the offensive pressure in the second half doubling its shots from the first half. The Pioneers outshot Heidelberg, 10-5, after halftime.
Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) got the win in net for Marietta. Penquite played all 90 minutes and recorded one save and the shutout. Ryan Newman allowed one goal and had two saves for Heidelberg.
Marietta returns home to host Capital University on Wednesday (Oct. 16). Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
