Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Crusaders capitalize on a pair of early goals to beat Men's Soccer

MARIETTA, Ohio — Capital University scored on a pair of direct kicks in the first half to take down Marietta College, 2-0, Wednesday (Oct. 16) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference men's soccer action. The loss drops Marietta to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. The Crusaders improve to 5-4-3 on the season and 2-2 in league play.

"We did everything we could, but when we give up two soft goals against a quality side like Capital it is always going to be tough to come back," Marietta head coach Joe Bergin said. "I have no complaints about the effort, we left it all on the field. We have a mountain to climb but I believe in our boys. We will get back at it on Saturday."

Both Crusader goals came on direct kicks from near midfield. In the 18th minute Brandon Woo took the kick and it found its way through the traffic in front of the goal and slid inside the far left post untouched for the goal. It was Woo's fourth of the season.

10 minutes later, it was déjà vu all over again. From almost the exact same spot near midfield, Woo sent the ball into the box where Shane Niemeier placed it into the lower left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. The goal was Niemeier's first of the season.

Kyle Morais posted the clean sheet in goal for the Crusaders. He had five saves. Dakota Penquite (Blanchester, Ohio/Blanchester) went the distance in goal for Marietta recording two saves.

The Pioneers took 14 shots to just eight for Capital. Marietta had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Marietta is back in action this Saturday (Oct. 19) when Wilmington College visits Marietta Field for a 7 p.m. matchup.
