STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action tonight as they swept Franciscan University, 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-19). With the win the Pioneer's improve to 3-2 overall on the season.
The first set was a hard fought battle as the teams were tied at 21-21 late in the set. The Pioneers rattled off the final four points, and won the first set, 25-21.
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) had a key kill to spark the Marietta first set win.
The Pioneer's carried their momentum over to the second frame as they jumped out to a 6-3 lead to force a Franciscan timeout. Out of the timeout, kills by
Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) propelled the Pioneer's to a big second set win. Marietta did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the second set, and won 25-9.
The Pioneers opened the third set on a 7-1 run. The run was led by
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) as she had three kills in the first seven points of the set. Marietta stretched out their, and won the final frame, 25-19.
The Pioneer's were led by Barnes as she had a game high 10 kills. Arrowood added to the attack as she had six kills, and two block assists in the match.
Defensively, Marietta was led by
April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) as she notched a game high 23 digs.
Abbi Thompson (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley) added eight digs for the defense, as well as four service aces in the game.
Setters
Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Ellie Gerber (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) split time as they had 13 and 10 assists respectively in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Friday (Sep. 7th) when they travel to compete in the Northwest Pennsylvania Challenge.
