Volleyball competes at Northwest Pennsylvania Challenge

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ERIE, Pa. – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action today as they competed in the Northwest Pennsylvania Challenge.   

The Pioneers dropped a pair of four set matches as they fell to Wooster, and host Penn State Behrend.  

Marietta dropped the first match of the day to Wooster in four sets, (25-22, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23).  The Pioneer's took the first set of the game before falling in the final three sets.

Offensively, Marietta was led by a trio of players.  Grace Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta), Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace), and Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) each had seven kills in the match.  Haas added four total blocks, and Ritenour added three total blocks in the match.  

Defensively, April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) led the way for the Pioneers as she had a team high 15 digs.  Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) pitched in with 13 digs in the match.  Shannon Haessly (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) added to the defensive effort with 10 digs in the game.     

The opening set of the second match of the day saw the Pioneer's grab a 7-3 edge behind a pair of kills from Barnes.  The Lions battled back and took the first set, 25-22.  

Marietta bounced back in the second set as they grabbed a 10-5 lead, with kills from Alissa Ginther (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye), Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), and Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison).  Late in set the Pioneers were down 19-16, and went on a 7-1 run to take a 23-20 edge.  The run was highlighted by a pair of kills from Ritenour, and Marietta won the second set, 25-23.

Penn State Berhend jumped out to an early 10-3 edge in the third set.  The Pioneer's fought hard but fell in the third set, 25-19.  The Lions grabbed a 12-5 lead to open the final frame and won the set, 25-19.   

The Pioneers were led by Ginther as she had a game high 13 kills.  Barnes added to the offensive attack as she had 11 kills, and a block assist.  Defensively, Marietta was led by Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) as she had a team high 14 digs and two service aces.  Abbi Thompson (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley) added to the defensive effort as she had 11 digs, and three service aces.  
Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Sep. 8th) as they compete in the Allegheny Gator Invitational.
