Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women's Tennis splits a pair of home matches

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday (Sept. 22) afternoon at the Beren Tennis Center. The Pioneers lost to Concordia University (Mich.), 6-3, and then defeated Shawnee State University by the same score. Marietta is now 1-2 on the season.

Sophomore Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and freshman Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) accounted for six of Marietta's nine team points on the day. The pair teamed up to win two doubles matches, while they each won both of their singles matches as well.

Concordia (4-2 overall) grabbed the early lead winning two of the three doubles matches. Charity Felton and Kaylee Tucker defeated Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) at No. 1 by the score of 8-2. At No. 3, Tina Perumalla and Hannah Sharon were 8-2 winners over Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) and Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan).

Kitchen and Thompson won the No. 2 match beating Taylor Kahlstorf and Kayla Verhelle, 8-2. Kitchen downed Verhelle at No. 3 singles, 6-0 and 6-0, while Thompson took down Kahlstorf at No. 4 by the same score.

In the top spot, Felton was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Warvell. At No. 2, Tucker beat Grim, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4 and 6-1. Perumalla topped Reed at No. 5, 7-5, 1-6 and 6-2. In the No. 6 slot, Sharon defeated Haas, 6-0 and 6-1.

Shawnee State (0-3) also jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Caleigh O'Neal and Jessica Willard beat Grim and Warvell at No. 1, 8-6. At No. 3, Claire Carruthers and Molly Stockton beat Haas and Reed, 8-3. Kitchen and Thompson were 8-1 winners against Alicia Bobst and Regan Osborn at No. 2.

The Pioneers bounced back to win five of the six singles matches to claim the team's first win of the season. Grim downed O'Neal at No. 2, 6-1 and 6-1. Kitchen blanked Osborn at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-0, while Thompson defeated Carruthers at No. 4, 6-2 and 7-5.

At No. 5, Reed posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win over Caitlyn McKell and Haas topped Bobst at No. 6, 7-5 and 6-3.

Shawnee State's final point came from Willard at No. 1 singles where she beat Warvell, 6-1 and 6-3.

Marietta closes out its fall competition season on Sunday (Sept. 23) with a 12 p.m. match at Bethany College.
