MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College opened its fall competition season with a 7-2 loss to Thomas More College Saturday (Sept. 15) afternoon at the Beren Family Tennis Center. The Saints improve to 3-1 on the season, while the Pioneers are 0-1 overall.
Thomas More swept the doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead. In the top spot, Hannah Lowman and Brooke Warden downed
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock), 8-1. Nicole Capodagli and Sarah Fellinger were 8-0 winners over
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) and
Anne Thompson (Wilmington, Ohio/Clinton-Massie) at No. 2. In the No.3 match,
Makenna Gallion (West Hamlin, W. Va./Lincoln County) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) fell to Alyssa Dowdell and Kayla Snyder, 8-2.
The Pioneers picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles. Kitchen defeated Lowman at No. 2, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6 and 1-0 (10-6). Thompson, a freshman, won her first collegiate match in three sets against Fellinger at No. 3. Thompson won the scores of 7-5, 3-6 and 1-0 (10-2).
At No. 1, Warden was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against Warvell. Matison Perry downed Reed at No. 4, 6-4 and 6-0. Lacey Pohlman beat Haas 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 5, while Jana Riffe defeated Gallion at No. 6 by the same score.
Marietta hosts Concordia University (Mich.) on Saturday (Sept.22) at 9 a.m.
