GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action today as they were defeated by Denison University in Livingston Gymnasium, 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 25-17, 27-25).
The first set of the match saw Denison grab an 11-8 lead to force a Pioneer's timeout. Out of the break, Marietta tied the game at 20 points apiece, behind a pair of service aces from
Abbi Thompson (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley). The Pioneer's finished off the first set comeback with a pair of kills from
Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace). Marietta won the first set, 25-22.
The second set of the match was a close battle as the score was tied four times early, with the match all square at 7-7. Denison was able to gain the advantage, and won the second set, 25-18.
The third set saw the Big Red jump out to a 9-5 lead, which forced a Pioneer's timeout. Marietta was unable to rally in the third set, and fell 25-17.
Denison grabbed a 9-4 advantage in the fourth set to force a Marietta timeout. Out of the timeout, the Pioneers tied the game at 11 points apiece. The run was sparked by a pair of kills from
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison). The final frame remained a hard fought battle, but Denison won the fourth set, 27-25.
The Pioneer offense was led by
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) as she had 10 kills, and two block assists in the match. Arrowood and Ritenour each pitched in with seven kills, and three blocks.
The Marietta defense was led by
April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) as she had a match high 21 digs. Thompson added 10 digs and two service aces to the Pioneers performance. Trimble had a team leading 4 total blocks in the game.
Ellie Gerber (New Philadelphia, Ohio/New Philadelphia) led the Pioneers with 17 assists in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Friday (Sep. 14) when they travel to take on Oberlin in the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic at the College of Wooster.
