Volleyball competes at Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic

Box Score 1 WOOSTER, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action tonight as they competed in the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic on the campus of the College of Wooster.

The Pioneers won their first match of the night against Oberlin College, 3-2 (25-17, 25-23, 25-16, 25-19, 15-10). Marietta swept Franciscan, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-19) in the second match of the night.  With the wins the Pioneers improve to 7-5 on the season.       

The opening match of the night started as the Pioneers scored the first three points in the first set, behind a kill from Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace).  Through the middle of the set Marietta stretched out their lead to 20-13, with kills from Maris Kaiser (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy), and Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison).  The Pioneers won the first set, 25-17.

The second set saw Oberlin jump out to a quick 5-1 advantage.  Marietta responded with a 10-1 run that saw them take an 11-6 lead.  The run was sparked by a pair of service aces from April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora).  The Pioneers rode that momentum to a 25-23 second set win.  

The third set was close early as the game remained tied at seven points apiece.  Oberlin was able to stretch out a lead in the third set and won the frame, 25-16.  

Oberlin carried their momentum over to the fourth set as they grabbed an early 7-1 edge.  Marietta battled through the set, but fell in the fourth set, 25-19.  

In the fifth and final frame, the Pioneers jumped out to a 6-1 lead, behind a kill from Ritenour.  Marietta was able to close out the decisive set as Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) finished the game with a kill.   

Defensively, Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) led Marietta with 13 digs in the first match of the night.  Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) added 11 digs, and 9 assists to the Pioneers defense.  Davis pitched in with 10 digs for the Pioneers.  

Offensively, Ritenour had a team leading 10 kills in the first match of the night.  Barnes added six kills, five digs, and one block assist in the first match.   

Marietta will return to the court Saturday (Sep. 15) when they wrap up their competition at the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic on the campus of the College of Wooster.
