Wabash knocks Baseball from NCAA Tournament

5/18/2018 2:41:00 PM

Box Score ADRIAN, Michigan — Marietta College saw its 2018 baseball season come to end with a 4-2 loss to Wabash College Friday (May 18) afternoon in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional being played at Nicolay Field on the campus of Adrian College.

The Etta Express finishes with a 27-18 overall record. Wabash improves to 29-16 and will play the loser of the La Roche College versus Adrian game on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.

Marietta says goodbye to nine seniors who won a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament titles and made three trips to the NCAA Tournament in their four years in the pinstripes. The 2018 seniors include Kordell Antill (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central), Michael Barnabei (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central), Austin Eaton (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon), Shane Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park), Connor Golden (South Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic), Ian Luttrell (River Forest, Ill./Oak Park River Forest), Scott Oberhelman (Washington Twp., N.J./Old Tappan), Chris Petrucci (Farmington, W.Va./Notre Dame) and David Stover (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson).

"This group of seniors have been great leaders on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom," Marietta head coach Brian Brewer said. "Coach Schaly always said 'you only go as far as your seniors take you' and these seniors took us farther than a year ago. They are great men and that's a credit to their parents."

Wabash did all of their damage in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sean Roginski lead off with a double to left field on a routine fly ball that Pioneer outfielder Zach Ward never saw off the bat. The Little Giants would get RBI doubles from Matthew Annee and Eric Chavez en route to a four-run rally.

Marietta cut the lead in half with two runs in the eighth. Trent Castle (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) led off with a line drive single to left and Brady Cottom (Matthews, N.C./Butler) followed with a base hit to right. Following a strikeout and a flyout, Petrucci walked to load the bases.

Damian Yenzi (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) lined a single up the middle scoring Castle and bringing clean-up hitter Mike Hale (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) to the plate. Wabash starter Cody Cochran plunked Hale forcing in Cottom with the second run.

Cochran (8-4) went 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Zach Moffett earned his ninth save of the year with 1.1 innings of one-hit relief. Moffett walked one and struck out one.

Oberhelman (4.0) started for the Pioneers and was charged with one run on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. He walked three and struck out four. Dalton Wiggins (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg South) gave up three runs on four hits with two walks in a third of an inning. Eaton, Antill and Luttrell all threw in relief.

Six different Pioneers each had one hit in the game with Ward collecting MC's only extrabase hit with a double in the second inning.
