COLUMBUS, Ohio — Capital University's No. 3 doubles team fought off four match points en route to the deciding win as the Crusaders edged Marietta College, 5-4, Saturday (April 7) afternoon in women's tennis.
Marietta falls to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital improves to 3-8 on the season and 2-2 in league matches.
Weather forced the match inside at the Scarborough East Tennis Club and, due to court availability, caused the singles matches to be played prior to the doubles.
With the match tied, 4-4, all eyes turned to the No. 3 doubles match between Capital's Julia Holt and MacKenzie Archibald and Marietta's
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion)m and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)).
The Pioneer duo led 7-6 and had four chances to put the match away and grab the deciding team point. Holt and Archibald turned back all four match points and went on to win the match, 9-7.
The match was tied, 3-3, after the singles match. Capital's Madison Watt defeated
Victoria Xie (Beijing, China/Fuzhou NO.1) in the top spot, 6-2 and 6-2. Maria Sadek beat
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-2 and Katie Woods topped
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) at No. 6, 6-2 and 6-4.
Marietta won Nos. 3-5. At No. 3,
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) downed Ashlee Freeman, 6-2 and 6-0.
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) bested Megan Williams in three sets at No. 4, 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3. Grim won at No. 5 over Archibald, 6-4 and 6-4.
The Crusaders went ahead 4-3 when their No. 1 team of Watt and Freeman topped Xie and Nelson, 8-1. Marietta evened the match when Kitchen and Warvell posted an 8-6 win against Sadek and Williams at No. 2.
Marietta returns home to host the University of Mount Union on Tuesday (April 10) at 3:30 p.m.
