MARIETTA, Ohio — The University of Mount Union swept Marietta College, 9-0, in women's tennis action on Tuesday (April 10) afternoon. The Pioneers fall to 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union improves to 10-5 on the season and 3-2 in conference play.
The Purple Raiders made quick work of the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 match, Gretchen Groves and Kayla Johnston beat
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (Beijing, China/Fuzhou NO.1) by the score of 8-1. Jordan Teaford and Gabrielle Wegener downed
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) at No. 2 by the same score. At No. 3,
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) dropped an 8-2 decision to Sierra Beighey and Trisha Kohut.
Mount Union posted straight set wins in each of the six singles matches. At No. 1, Groves topped Xie, 6-1 and 6-2. Teaford blanked Nelson at No. 2, 6-0 and 6-0, while Johnston defeated Warvell at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-0.
Wegener was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Grim at No. 4. Reed fell to Beighey at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-0. Kohut finished the sweep with a win over Haas at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0.
Marietta travels to Westerville on Thursday (April 12) for a 3:30 p.m. match at Otterbein University.
