MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team downed rival Muskingum University, 6-3, Wednesday (April 25) afternoon at the Beren Family Tennis Center.
Marietta improves to 6-11 overall and 2-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Muskies fall to 2-9 on the season and 1-7 on conference play.
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) made quick work of Levi Hall and Colin Keck at No. 1 doubles. The Pioneer duo posted an 8-1 win to give Marietta an early lead.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 3-0 with a sweep of the doubles.
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) downed Brenton Franks and Micah Keith at No. 2, 8-6, while
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) were 9-8 (7-3) winners over Gordie German and Caleb Patton at No. 3.
Marietta secured the team victory with wins in the first two singles matches to finish. Spencer blanked Hall at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-0, while Hirschfield beat German at No. 2 by the same score.
Franks got the Muskies on the board with a win over Watson at No. 3. Watson won the first set, 6-4, and Franks took the second set, 6-3. Franks won the deciding third set, 1-0 (10-5), for the victory.
Marietta's final point came at No. 6 where Hogan topped Keck, 6-1 and 6-4.
With the match decided, Muskingum picked up wins at Nos. 4 and 5. Keith defeated Emerick at No. 4, 7-5 and 6-1. Patton downed DeCicco at No. 5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 1-0 (10-2).
Marietta wraps up the regular season on Saturday (April 28) when John Carroll University visits for a 1 p.m. match.
