MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team split a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference matches Saturday (April 21) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The Pioneers lost to Ohio Northern University, 9-0, and beat Heidelberg University, 6-3.
Marietta is now 5-14 overall and 2-5 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 17-4 on the season and 7-0 in the OAC. Heidelberg falls to 1-14 overall and 1-7 in conference matches.
Against Heidelberg, the Pioneer trailed 2-1 after doubles. Marietta's No. 2 team of
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) blanked Jillian Goulet and Mallory Paul. At No. 1,
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (Beijing, China/Fuzhou NO.1) fell to Aline Rojas and Heidi Saba, 8-0, while Gabi Osterman and Bianca Torres beat
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)), 8-5.
Heidelberg's final point came at No. 2 singles where Rojas beat Nelson, 6-2 and 6-3.
Xie won at No. 1 singles against Goulet, 6-3 and 6-0. At No. 3, Kitchen blanked Osterman, 6-0 and 6-0.
Warvell won a three-set thriller over Paul at No. 4. Warvell dropped the first set, 2-6, before bouncing back to win the second, 6-4, and the third, 1-0 (10-7).
Grim downed Torres at No. 5, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-0, while Reed topped Megan Novess at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1.
In the first match of the day, Ohio Northern started with a sweep of the doubles. At No. 1, Kaleigh Cummins and Sabine Worthoff topped Xie and Nelson, 8-1. Lynn Kelly and Mackenzie Wills beat Kitchen and Warvell at No. 2 and Ashley Ochsenhirt and Katie Curry downed Grim and Haas by the same 8-0 score.
Ochsenhirt took the No. 1 singles match from Xie, 6-0 and 6-0. At No. 2, Kelly defeated Nelson, 6-1 and 6-0, while Worthoff bested Kitchen at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-0.
At No. 4, Wills downed Warvell, 6-1 and 6-0. Grim lost to Curry at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-1, while Jordan Dodson beat Reed at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1.
Marietta plays at John Carroll University on Saturday (April 28) at 1 p.m.
