MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to visiting Otterbein University Thursday (April 19) afternoon. The Pioneers fall to 5-8 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Cardinals improve to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.
Otterbein posted a pair of quick 8-0 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles. Derek Krieger and Tyler Wharton beat
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) at No. 2, while Jamie Price and Riley Yost downed
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 3.
In the top doubles match,
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) fell to Jared Deel and Connor Radune, 8-2.
The Cardinals won each of the six singles matches in straight sets. Yost blanked Hogan at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0, and Price beat Emerick at No. 4 by the same score to secure the fifth team point and the victory.
At No. 1, Radune topped Spencer, 6-2 and 6-0. Wharton was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Hirschfield at No. 2, while Krieger took down Watson at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-4. Juan Vera completed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-2 win against DeCicco at No. 5.
Marietta plays a pair of OAC matches at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio on Saturday (April 21). The Pioneers play Baldwin Wallace at 10 a.m. and Ohio Northern at 1 p.m.
