MASON, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference matches Saturday (April 21) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. The Pioneers lost to Baldwin Wallace University and Ohio Northern University by the same 9-0 score.
Marietta falls to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the OAC. Baldwin Wallace improved to 12-4 on the season and 3-3 in the OAC. Ohio Northern is 11-7 overall and 5-2 in conference matches.
BW swept the three doubles matches for an early lead. Dominic Polifrone and Matt Harris won a hard fought battle over
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No.1, 8-3.
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) lost 8-0 to Jake Elbin and Alex Papke at No. 2, while Roger Boyer and Michael Benotti downed
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 3 by the same score.
The Yellow Jackets posted straight-set wins at each of the six singles positions. Polifrone beat Spencer at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-3. Elbin was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Hirschfield at No. 2. And Boyer defeated Watson at No. 3, 6-2 and 6-1.
At No. 4, Benotti blanked Emerick, 6-0 and 6-0. Papke defeated DeCicco at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-1, while Ben Binion topped Hogan at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-0.
Ohio Northern swept the doubles play in the second match. At No. 1 Hoang Do and Vinh Thai beat Spencer and Hirschfield, 8-2. Tim Kargl and Andrew Garcia topped Watson and Emerick at No. 2 by an 8-1 score, while Connor Christian and Jake Abbott posted the same winning score over DeCicco and Hogan at No. 3.
Spencer fell to Thai at No. 1 single, 6-2 and 6-1. Do beat Hirschfield at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-3, while Christian blanked Watson at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-0.
At No. 4, Kargl was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Emerick. Hurley topped DeCicco at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-0, while Abbott completed the sweep with a win against Hogan at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-2.
Marietta plays at Thomas More College on Sunday (April 22) at 3 p.m.
