ZANESVILLE, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team was nearly perfect in a 9-0 win over rival Muskingum University Wednesday (April 18) afternoon. The Pioneers lost only two games, one in doubles and one in singles, the entire match.
Marietta improves to 4-13 on the season and 1-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Muskies fall to 0-11 overall and 0-6 in conference matches.
The Pioneers' top two doubles teams both posted 8-0 wins.
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (Beijing, China/Fuzhou NO.1) downed Kristen Chandler and Manda Gaeckle at No. 1, while
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) blanked Sydney McDaniel and Kenzie Simmons.
At No. 3,
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) and
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) downed Emily Yeager and Alivia Bates, 8-1.
Muskingum managed to take one game in Chandler's straight-set loss to Xie at No. 1 singles. Xie won the match, 6-0 and 6-1. The other five singles matches were all 6-0, 6-0 Pioneer wins.
Nelson beat McDaniel at No. 2, while Kitchend downed Gaeckle at No. 3. Warvell topped Simmons at No. 4,
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) defeated Bates at No. 5 and Reed blanked Yeager at No. 6.
Marietta is back in action with a pair of matches on Saturday (April 21) at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in mason, Ohio. The Pioneers play Ohio Northern University at 1 p.m. and Heidelberg University at 3 p.m.
