MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 15 Marietta College split a doubleheader with rival Muskingum University Wednesday (April 18) in Ohio Athletic Conference baseball action at Don Schaly Stadium. Muskingum won game one, 2-1, while the Etta Express posted a 9-2 win in the second game.
Marietta is now 19-7 overall and sits atop the OAC standings with an 8-2 conference record. Muskingum moves to 12-16 on the season and 5-7 in the OAC.
Muskie freshman pitcher Nolan Fernandes (3-5) scattered five hits and kept the Pioneer bats in check for the win in game one. He worked 7.1 innings and allowed one run with four walks and four strikeouts. Levi Boyer picked up his second save of the year with 1.2 innings of shutout relief. He walked two and had one strikeout.
Marietta's
David Stover (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) (7-1) was equally impressive giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits in 9.0 innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.
Muskingum took advantage of a Pioneer error to score an unearned run in the top of the first inning. The Muskies made it 2-0 in the fourth when Ben Van Wey picked up an RBI on an infield single.
The Pioneers cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning.
Geoff Snyder (Norton, Ohio/Norton) walked and
Chris Petrucci (Farmington, W.Va./Notre Dame) singled to start the inning.
Shane Fetsko (South Park, Pa./South Park) sacrificed both runners into scoring position and then a wild pitch allowed Snyder to score.
Marietta loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning but Boyer got Marietta pinch hitter
Jonathan Pingree (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) to ground out to the shortstop for the final out.
In the second game, Marietta plated four runs in the first inning and built a 7-0 lead after three innings. Senior
Scott Oberhelman (Washington Twp., N.J./Old Tappan) (3-1) cruised through 7.0 strong innings. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out four.
Easton Berry (Ripley, W.Va./Ripley) retired both hitters he faced in the eighth inning before turning the ball over to
Kordell Antill (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central). Antill tossed 1.1 perfect innings striking out a pair of Muskies.
Josh Bigrigg (2-4) started on the mound for Muskingum and threw 2.0 innings. He allowed seven runs, four earned, on seven hits. Holden Martin and Bryce Husted each pitched 3.0 innings for the Muskies.
Petrucci went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in to lead the Pioneer attack.
Brady Cottom (Matthews, N.C./Butler) finished with a double and three RBI, while
Seamus Kenneally (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) had a pair of singles. Leadoff hitter
Geoff Snyder (Norton, Ohio/Norton) doubled and scored three times.
Marietta travels to Ada, Ohio for a key OAC doubleheader at Ohio Northern University on Saturday (April 21). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
