MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team downed Mount Vernon Nazarene, 5-4, in a close match Saturday (April 14) afternoon at the Beren Family Tennis Center. The Pioneers are now 3-12 overall, while the Cougars are 5-13 on the season.
Marietta led 2-0 before the match began due to a pair of defaults from Mount Vernon at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
The Pioneers' top doubles team of
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (Beijing, China/Fuzhou NO.1) fell to Gaby Reyes and Ashley Weber, 8-4. At No. 2,
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) were 8-3 winners over Sarah Higgins and Shelbi Keller.
Kitchen and Warvell each posted wins in singles play. Kitchedn defeated Weber at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-1, while Warvell topped Keller at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-4.
In the top singles match, Reyes edged Xie, 6-2 and 6-3. Higgins took the No. 2 match from Nelson, 6-3 and 6-0.
Marietta will host the University of Pikeville on Sunday (April 15) at 12 p.m.
