MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's tennis team defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene, 5-4, Saturday (April 14) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 5-6 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 2-16 overall.
With only five healthy players, Mount Vernon was forced to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches giving Marietta a 2-0 lead before the first serve of the match.
After splitting the two remaining doubles matches, the Pioneers held a 3-1 advantage. Mount Vernon's Logan Gauthier and Danny Mayotte downed
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) at No. 1, 9-8 (7-5).
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) posted an 8-5 win over Vince LoPrinzi and Eric Miller at No. 2.
Marietta got singles wins from Hirschfield at No. 2 and Watson at No. 3. Hirschfield topped Gauthier, 6-3 and 7-5, while Watson beat Kevin Maurer, 6-0 and 6-2.
At No. 1, Mayotte bested Spencer, 6-4 and 6-0. Miller defeated Emerick at No. 4, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4. LoPrinzi accounted for Mount Vernon's final point with a win over
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) at No. 5, 6-2 and 7-5.
Marietta is back in action on Tuesday (April 17) when Muskingum University visits the Beren Family Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. match.
