Softball splits with Mount Union

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with the University of Mount Union on Wednesday (April 11) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 12-4, in six innings and Mount Union took game two, 10-8.

Marietta moves to 13-13 on the season and 5-5 in the OAC. Mount Union is 10-16 overall and 3-7 in conference play.

The Pioneers erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning in the first game and never looked back. Mount Union staved off the run rule with three in the top of the fifth inning, but Marietta plated one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to end the game.

Ashley Tschudy (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) singled up the middle driving in Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) with the winning run. Tschudy went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI. Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) all had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.  Rockocy smacked a two-run triple in Marietta's second inning rally.

Jackie Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (6-4) started and picked up the win in the circle. She threw 5.0 innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on eight hits. Mulvain walked one and struck out three. Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) worked 1.0 inning of hitless relief.

Hannah Reusser (7-7) went the distance for Mount Union and was charged with 12 runs, 11 earned, on 15 hits. She walked three and struck out three.

Mount Union hit three home runs in game two and scored five runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to earn the split.

Rockocy crushed a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Kirk would add an RBI double in the frame extending the MC lead to 3-0.

The Purple Raiders strung together six hits in the fifth, including a leadoff home run from Maggie Dominick, to grab a 5-3 lead. After Marietta tied the game in the bottom of the inning, Mount took the lead for good with five more runs in the sixth.

Richardson (2-3) was tagged with the loss in relief. Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) started and allowed four runs on four hits in 4.0 innings of work. Richardson gave up five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings, while Mulvain allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings.

Jordan Tull started for Mount Union and pitched 3.0 innings giving up three runs on five hits. Shelby Vansickle (1-1) earned the win tossing 3.0 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Reusser notched her second save of the season with 1.0 inning of shutout relief.

Tschudy and Prologo each had three hits for the Pioneers. Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet), Pallay and Alderson added two hits apiece.

Marietta hosts Wilmington College for Community Day on Saturday (April 14). First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
