MARIETTA, Ohio — Sophomore first baseman
Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) crushed a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning giving Marietta a sweep of Wilmington College Saturday (April 14) afternoon during the 10th annual Community day at Marietta Field. The game winner was Miller's first career home run.
Marietta won the first game, 5-0, and took the nightcap by the score of 3-2. The Pioneers improve to 15-13 overall and 7-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington falls to 9-13 overall and 2-10 in the OAC.
MC used the long ball in the first game too. Freshman designated player
Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) smacked a three-run shot to left field in the Pioneers' four-run third inning. Pallay had an RBI double in the first inning driving in four of Marietta's runs and scoring the fifth.
Jackie Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (7-4) went the distance in the circle for the Pioneers recording her first career shutout. Mulvain pitched 7.0 innings and allowed six hits. She struck out one and did not issue a walk.
Grace Shell (5-5) took the loss for Wilmington. She tossed 6.0 innings and gave up five runs on nine hits. Shell walked three and struck out six.
In addition to Pallay, Miller and
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) had two hits in the game for Marietta. Tom doubled and scored a run, while Miller had a triple and an RBI.
The Quakers broke a scoreless tie in game two with a run in the sixth. Wilmington added another in the top of the seventh and led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the seventh.
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) reached on a one-out walk. Following a strike out,
Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) singled to center to keep the Pioneers alive for Miller. Miller lined the game winning shot over the leftfield fence and was mobbed by her teammates at the plate.
Beth Persicano (4-8) took the loss for the Quakers. She pitched 6.2 innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Persicano walked two and struck out one.
Richardson (3-3) grabbed the win with 1.1 innings of relief. Richardson allowed one run on two hits and had three strikeouts.
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) started and worked 5.2 innings. She gave up one run on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Pioneer third baseman
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.
Marietta travels to New Concord on Tuesday (April 17) for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Muskingum University.
