ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union swept Marietta College, 9-0, in men's tennis action on Wednesday (April 11) afternoon. The Purple Raiders improve to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Marietta falls to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
In the most competitive match of the day,
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) fell to Robert Cross and Zach Teffner at No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-4. Jackson Schneider and Mark Beebe blanked
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) at No. 2, 8-0. Antonio Massucci and Justin Kelley downed
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) by the same score at No. 3.
The Purple Raiders posted straight set victories in each of the six singles matches. In the top spot, Cross beat Spencer, 6-1 and 6-1. Hirschfield lost to Schneider at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-1, while Teffner swept Watson at No. 3, 6-0 and 6-0.
Massucci was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Emerick at No. 4, while Beebe defeated DeCicco at No. 5, 6-1 and 6-0. In the final match, Kelley beat Hogan at No. 6, 6-0 and 6-1.
Marietta hosts the College of Wooster, ranked No. 3 nationally, Thursday (April 12) evening for a single, nine-inning game at Don Schaly Stadium. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
