COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta College exploded for 21 runs in a doubleheader softball sweep of Capital University Tuesday (April 10) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 11-3, and then took the second game by the score of 10-2 in six innings.
Marietta improves to 12-12 on the season and 4-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Crusaders fall to 6-20 overall and 2-6 in conference games.
The 21 runs are the highest single day output for the Pioneers since scoring 21 runs in a doubleheader against Heidelberg nearly two years ago.
Capital jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Crusader starting pitcher Brianna Reardon cruised through the first five innings scattering five Pioneer hits.
MC erupted for eight runs in the top of the sixth and then tacked on three more in the seventh. Back-to-back home runs from
Jordan Pallay (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) and
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) highlighted the sixth inning rally.
Pallay crushed a three-run homer over the left field fence and then Rockocy followed with another shot to left. The home run was Pallay's fifth of the season, second most in the OAC, and Rockocy's first of the spring.
Reardon (5-13) took the loss. She gave up eight runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Sarah Franczak threw 1.1 innings and allowed three runs on two hits with four walks.
Maddi Liston (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) started in the circle for Marietta and tossed 3.2 innings. Liston gave up three runs on seven hits. She walked three and struck out three.
Hannah Richardson (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) (2-2) picked up the win with 3.1 innings of shutout relief. She allowed four hits, walked one and struck out two.
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored for the Pioneers. Rockocy had a double and a home run, while
Ashley Tschudy (New Philadelphia, Ohio/Indian Valley) had two hits including a double. Pallay finished with the home run and four RBI.
Six different Pioneers hit doubles in the second game as Marietta broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Jackie Mulvain (Warren, Ohio/Champion) (5-4) pitched a complete game for the win. She allowed two runs on just three hits and two walks in 6.0 innings of work.
Chevonne Hayslett (1-7) started and was tagged with the loss for the Crusaders. She gave up five runs, two earned, on four hits. Hayslett walked one and struck out one. Reardon threw the final 2.0 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on seven hits.
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Pallay had a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Tom,
Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield),
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa./Chartiers-Houston) and
Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) each had a double for the Pioneers.
