BETHANY, West Virginia — The Marietta College men's tennis team recorded its first win of the season beating Bethany College, 7-2, Tuesday (Mar. 6) afternoon. The Pioneers are 1-2 on the season, while Bethany falls to 0-3 overall.
Marietta's No. 2 doubles team of
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) made quick work of Danny Booth and Darren Johnson posting a fast 8-1 victory.
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) downed Tyler Beck and Joseph Fiasco at No. 3 by the score of 8-4.
The Pioneers made it a sweep of the doubles matches when MC's No. 1 team of
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) held on for a 9-7 win over Drake Berlin and Chris Ray.
Bethany picked up wins in the top two singles matches to get within one point, 3-2. Ray beat Spencer at No. 1 by the scores of 6-2, 4-6 and 1-0 (10-6), while Berlin took down Hirschfield 3-6, 6-1 and 1-0 (10-4), at No. 2.
Marietta bounced back with straight-set wins in each of the final four singles positions. At No. 3, Watson edged Booth, 6-3 and 6-4. Emerick won at No. 4 over Johnson, 6-1 and 6-1. DeCicco posted a 6-2, 6-3 win against Fiasco at No. 5 and Hogan defeated Beck at No. 6, 6-4 and 6-2.
The Pioneers are back in action with five matches over spring break on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Marietta opens on Sunday (Mar. 11) against Arcadia University at 12:15 p.m.
