WOOSTER, Ohio — The Marietta College women's tennis team opened the spring season with a pair of matches at the College of Wooster on Saturday (Mar. 3). The Pioneers lost to Calvin College and Wooster by the same 9-0 score. Marietta is 1-5 overall this year.
Calvin (4-2 overall) swept the three doubles matches. Leah Newhof and Madeline Brouwer downed
Victoria Xie () and
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch), 8-0, in the top spot. Alexis Bonner and Brittney Statema beat
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) at No. 3 by the same score. Marietta's No. 2 team of
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) battled Lark Foote and Anna Asfour before falling 8-4.
Haas and Sydney Ellsworth squared off at No. 6 singles in the best match of the day. Ellsworth got the win, 6-3 and 6-0. Calvin posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in the other five singles matches.
Wooster (5-1 overall) also swept the double play. Joy Li and Morgan Wagers defeated Xie and Nelson at No. 1 by the score of 8-0. Shannon Sertz and Laura Haley won at No. 2 over Grim and Kitchen, 8-1. In the final doubles match, Sarah Duran and Mali Zemedkun were 8-0 winners against Reed and Hass.
The Fighting Scots posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in the top three singles spots. Li beat Xie, Duran dispatched Kitchen and Sertz defeated Nelson from one to three, respectively. At No. 6, Zemedkun won 6-0 and 6-0 over Hass.
In the No. 4 position, Wagers downed Grim, 6-2 and 6-0. Kendra Devereux completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Reed at No. 5.
The Pioneers are back in action with three matches over spring break in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Marietta plays Webster University at 10 a.m. on Monday (Mar. 12), St. Mary's College of Maryland at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Stevenson University at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.
