BEREA, Ohio — The Marietta College softball team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play at Baldwin Wallace on Monday (Mar. 26) afternoon. The Pioneers won game one, 3-2, while the Yellow Jackets earned a split with a 1-0 win the second game.
Marietta is 9-9 on the season and 1-1 in OAC games. Baldwin Wallace is 6-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Freshman Jackie Mulvain (4-2) pitched the complete game victory for the Pioneers. She allowed two runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Sam Mott (3-4) took the loss. Mott gave up three runs on four hits. She walked nine and struck out 11 Marietta hitters.
The Pioneers broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth inning. Kayla Alderson led off with a double. Following a line drive out, Jordan Pallay and
Erin Miller (Woodsfield, Ohio/Monroe Central) walked to load the bases.
Maicy Kirk (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) drew the third straight base on balls from Mott scoring Alderson.
Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field allowing Pallay to tag and score for a 2-0 Pioneer lead.
BW cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Erica English reached on a two-out single and stole second base. Macy Leach knocked her in with a single to right center.
Marietta added an insurance run in the seventh when
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) singled and Alderson doubled giving the Pioneers runners at second and third with one out.
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) drove in Cook with a base hit to center field.
The Yellow Jackets rallied in the bottom of the inning. Mott reached on a one-out double and was lifted for pinch runner Hailey Owens. An infield single from Abbie Thompson moved Owens to third.
Alexis Boledovic reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Owens to score. Thompson was put out at second on the play. Alex Kozich lined out to right field ending the game.
Alderson had two of MC's four hits in the game. She finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, a run scored and two RBI.
Pitching dominated again in the second game. Baldwin Wallace scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. English led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Owens singled up the middle scoring English.
Abby Cosart (2-2) went the distance in the circle for BW. She worked 7.0 innings and scattered five hits in the shutout. Cosart walked one and struck out three.
Maddi Liston (3-4) threw 6.0 strong innings for the Pioneers. She gave up one run on three hits. Liston walked three and struck out one.
Prologo was 3-for3 with a double, while Pallay went 2-for-3.
Marietta hosts Bethany College on Wednesday (Mar. 28) for its home opener. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
