Heidelberg knocks off Softball in home opener

MARIETTA, Ohio — Heidelberg University swept an Ohio Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Saturday (March 31) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Student Princes won the first game, 8-2, and then held on to win game two, 8-6.

Marietta is now 9-11 on the season and 1-3 in OAC games. Heidelberg improves to 13-0 overall and 3-1 on conference play.

Heidelberg took advantage of several Pioneer errors in the first game and built a 4-0 lead. Pioneer freshman designated player Jordan Pallay cut the lead in half with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning.

The Student Princes put the game away with three runs in the sixth inning. After Marietta retired the first two batters of the inning, Heidelberg strung together four straight singles. The big blow was a two-run single off the bat of Shelby Miller.

Jackie Mulvain (4-3) started in the circle for the Pioneers and was tagged with the loss. She threw 5.2 innings and allowed eight runs, five earned, on 10 hits. Mulvain struck out two. Hannah Richardson worked the final 1.1 innings and gave up one hit.

Kaitlyn Moore (7-4) went the distance for the Student Princes striking out 10 Pioneers. Moore gave up two runs on seven hits and walked three.

Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) each had two hits in the game for Marietta. Cook and Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) had doubles and Pallay had the home run.

Cook had the hot bat for Marietta in the second game going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Pallay collected two hits in three at bats, scored once and drove in one run. Freshman Ashley Tschudy smacked a three-run double.

Maddi Liston (3-5) started and took the loss. She threw 5.2 innings and was charged with eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits. Liston walked one and struck out one. Richardson worked the final 1.1 against and gave up two hits and struck out one.

Morgan Daniels (2-0) got the win after throwing 4.0 innings. She allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out four. Vanessa Macias notched her second save of the season with 3.0 innings of relief. Macia gave up three runs on six hits and walked one.

Marietta grabbed the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Daniels struck out the first two MC hitters but then surrendered singles to Pallay, Cook and Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) loading the bases. Tschudy lined a 1-1 pitch into the right-center gap clearing the bases for a 3-1 Pioneer lead.

Heidelberg tied the game with two runs in the second and then took the lead for good with two more in the third. After a three0run sixth, the Student Princes led 8-3.

The Pioneers put together another two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. Marietta loaded the bases with two outs for Pallay. After working the count full, the freshman walked forcing in Kaitlin Shine. Cook followed with a single up the middle plating two more runs.

Trailing by two, 8-6, Marietta left two runners on base in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The Pioneers stranded 10 runners in the game.

Marietta hosts Bethany College on Monday (April 2) in a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
