Softball splits nonconference doubleheader at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio — After nine days off due to inclement weather, the Marietta College softball team split a nonconference doubleheader at Kenyon College Sunday (Mar. 25) afternoon. Kenyon won the first game, 7-2, and the Pioneers took the second game, 7-5.

Marietta moves to 8-8 on the season, while Kenyon is now 14-8 overall.

The Ladies scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie in the first game.

Jordan Pallay hit a two-run double into the left center gap in the top of the fourth inning to give Marietta a 2-1 lead. Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet), Kayla Alderson and Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) each singled to load the bases with one out before Pallay delivered the big hit.

Grace Pilz hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to even the score, 2-2. Grace Finn smacked a two-run double in the fifth and then drove in another run with a double in the sixth.

Keely Sweet (7-5) started and got the win for the Ladies. She threw 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits. Sweet struck out three Pioneers.

Jackie Mulvain (3-2) started and took the loss for Marietta. Mulvain pitched 5.2 innings and gave up seven runs on 10 hits. She walked one and struck out one. Hannah Richardson retired the only batter she faced.

Rockocy was the lone Pioneer with two hits in the game.

In the second game, Marietta scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 7-3 lead. Kenyon rallied in the bottom of the seventh scoring twice before Richardson closed out the Pioneer victory.

Ashley Tschudy drove in MC's first run in the fifth with a double down the left field line. Cook followed with a two-run single.

In the sixth, Ali Prologo (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) had RBI singles and then Tschudy hit her second RBI double of the game plating Marietta's final run.

Maddi Liston (3-3) started and got the win for the Pioneers. She threw 6.0 innings and was charged with five runs on six hits. Liston walked four and struck out seven. Richardson earned her first save of the season with an inning of one-hit relief.

Amanda Coyle (5-2) took the loss working 4.2 innings and giving up four runs on five hits. Austen Whibley allowed three runs on four hits in 1.0 of relief, while Jace Juliano tossed 1.1 innings of shutout relief.

Tschudy went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and one run scored. Alderson was also 2-for-4 with a triple and run scored.

Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play Monday (Mar. 26) with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Baldwin Wallace University.
