HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina — The Marietta College men's tennis team defeated a shorthanded Wisconsin Lutheran College team, 7-2, Friday (Mar. 16) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-5 on the season, while the Warriors slip to 0-10 overall.
With only five players available for today's match, Wisconsin Lutheran was forced to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches giving Marietta a 2-0 lead before the first serve.
The Pioneers won the remaining two doubles matches and led 4-0 heading into singles play. MC's No. 1 doubles team of
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) defeated Ben and Jonny Wordell, 8-6. A No. 2,
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) were 8-2 winners against Grant Fleming and Matt Plaski.
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) secured the team victory with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Jake Brandt at No. 5 singles.
Marietta also picked up points at Nos. 2 and 4 singles. Hirschfield downed Jonny Wordell at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-2, while Emerick beat Fleming at No. 4, 6-3 and 6-3.
The Warriors were victorious at Nos. 1 and 3 singles. In the top spot, Ben Wordell edged Spencer, 7-5 and 6-0. At No. 3, Plaski defeated Watson, 4-6, 6-2 and 1-0 (10-4).
Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 28) at Ohio Christian University. Match time is set for 3:30 p.m.
