Men's Tennis tops the Trailblazers 6-3

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Despite giving two points away by default, the Marietta College men's tennis team won its second straight match Wednesday (March 28) afternoon. The Pioneers defeated Ohio Christian University by the score of 6-3.

With a player sidelined by the flu, the Pioneers were forced to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches giving the Trailblazers a 2-0 lead before the point of the match was played.

Marietta (3-5 overall) quickly evened the match with victories in the top two doubles matches. At No. 1, Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) were 8-2 winners over RJ Hayes and Ryan Jones. MC's Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) downed Damon Foster and Nathan Gaines, 8-5.

Straight-set wins in the first three singles matches secured the team victory for the Pioneers. Spencer beat Jones, 6-1 and 6-2, in the top spot. At No. 2, Hirschfield downed Foster, 6-2 and 6-1, while Watson topped Hayes at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-0.

Ohio Christian (1-10 overall) picked up its final point at No. 4 singles. Gaines edged Emerick in three sets. Emerick won the first set, 6-3, but Gaines took the next two, 7-6 (7-3) and 1-0 (10-6).

Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) grabbed Marietta's final points with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Samuel Diggs at No. 5.

Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play at Heidelberg University on Friday (Mar. 30). The match starts at 1 p.m.
