HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina — Cornell College blanked Marietta College, 9-0, Friday (Mar. 16) in women's tennis action. The Pioneers are now 2-8 on the season, while Cornell improves to 11-6.
Cornell swept the three doubles match for an early 3-0 lead. At No. 1, Raquel Ruiz and Julia Thome were 8-1 winners over
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (). The No. 3 team of Ellie Davidson and Abbey Nelson downed
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) by the same score. Janice Elkerton and Gabriella Ferro beat
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock), 8-3, at No. 2.
In singles action, Thome defeated Xie at No. 1, 6-0 and 6-0. Nelson took the No. 2 match from Nelson, 6-1 and 6-1, and Ruiz beat Kitchen at No. 3, 6-3 and 6-2.
At No. 4, Ferro was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Warvell. Elkerton topped Grim at No. 4, 6-1 and 6-1, while Megan Pope completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Reed at No. 6.
Marietta opens Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday (Mar. 24) at Baldwin Wallace University. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
