HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina — Freshman
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) won the deciding match to give Marietta College a 5-4 win over Stevenson University Thursday (Mar. 15) afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-7 on the season, while Stevenson falls to 1-6 overall.
Grim downed Christina Endy, 6-2 and 6-0, minutes after sophomore
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan) tied the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Esha Kashmiri at No. 6.
Marietta led 2-1 after doubles.
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) defeated Kirstyn Davidson and Megan Waskiewicz by the score of 8-6 at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3, Grim and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)) were 8-3 winners against Nina Bretz and Endy.
Stevenson kept the match close with a win at No. 1 doubles. Kelsi Mentzer and Jenna Slove downed
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (), 8-3.
The Mustangs took a 3-2 lead with quick wins in the top two singles positions. Skove beat Xie at No. 1, 6-2 and 6-0, while Davidson took down Nelson at No. 2, 6-3 and 6-1.
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) evened the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Mentzer at No. 3. Waskiewicz gave the lead back to Stevenson with a win at No. 4. She downed Warvell, 6-3 and 6-3.
But wins from Reed and Grim secured the victory for the Navy Blue and White.
Marietta wraps up its spring trip with a 10:30 a.m. match against Cornell College on Friday (Mar. 16).
