KISSIMMEE, Florida — The Marietta College softball team experienced both ends of the spectrum on Thursday (Mar. 15) splitting a pair of games. The Pioneers lost to New York University, 6-0, and then pounded Beloit College, 15-3, in five innings.
Marietta is now 6-6 on the season. The Violets of NYU are 4-4 overall, while the Buccaneers from Beloit fall to 1-8 this spring.
NYU starting pitcher Diana King (1-0) allowed just two hits in the shutout and struck out 10 Pioneers in 7.0 innings of work.
Jackie Mulvain (2-1) suffered the loss allowing three runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings. Mulvain struck out two. Hannah Richardson threw 2.1 innings and gave up three runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Maddi Liston worked the last 1.2 innings and gave up two hits and one walk.
NYU scored twice in the second inning and then added one in the fourth and three more in the sixth.
Allyson Schmus drove in both Violet runs in the second inning with a double down the leftfield line.
Diana King smacked an RBI double in the sixth and Claire Stefanelli drove in two runs with a single to right field making it 6-0.
Reagan Tom (Chandlersville, Ohio/Philo) and
Alyssa Cook (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) had Marietta's two hits in the game.
The Pioneers broke out their bats in game two. Marietta banged out 17 hits as eight of the nine offensive starters hit safely against Beloit.
Marietta jumped on Beloit starting pitcher, Morgan Lippert, right from the start knocking her out of the circle before the first inning was over. The Pioneers scored five runs in the frame and never looked back.
Lippert (0-4) allowed five runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. She walked one. Alyssa Boltik was touched up for four runs on six hits in 1.1 of work, while Bree Swanson threw the final 3.0 innings and gave up six runs on nine hits.
Mulvain (3-1) went the distance for the Pioneers and allowed three runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out five.
The Pioneers scored in every inning including another five spot in the top of the fifth. Jordan Pallay launched her second home run of the season and finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.
Tom, Cook, Kayla Alderson,
Lauren Rockocy (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton) and Kaitlin Shine all had two hits in the game for Marietta. Shine also had three RBI.
Marietta wraps up its Florida trip with two games on Friday (Mar. 16) afternoon. The Pioneers play Salve Regina at 1:30 p.m. and Oswego State at 3:45 p.m.
