HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina — St. Mary's College of Maryland posted an 8-1 decision over Marietta College Tuesday (Mar. 13) evening in women's tennis action. The Pioneers fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Seahawks improve to 4-1 overall.
Freshman
Katie Kitchen (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) delivered the Pioneers' lone victory. Kitchen defeated Raziela Manangan at No. 3 singles by the scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
St. Mary's led 3-0 after doubles. In the top spot, Melissa Barall and Sophia Gary blanked
Latrice Nelson (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) and
Victoria Xie (), 8-0. Chelsea English and Manangan were 8-1 winners over Kitchen and
Erin Warvell (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) at No. 2. In the third match, Savannah Bergen and Claire Bodine beat
Destiny Grim (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and
Reagan Haas (Marietta, Ohio/Parkersburg Catholic (W.Va.)), 8-2.
Barall won the No. 1 singles match, 6-0 and 6-0, over Xie. At No. 2, Gary downed Nelson, 6-0 and 6-0, while Alden Grosh posted a 6-2, 7-5 win against Warvell at No. 4
The bottom two singles matches both went three sets. At No. 5, Bodine edged Grim, 6-2, 4-6 and 1-0 (10-0). Cristal Garcia-Lara took the No. 6 match from
Liz Reed (Logan, Ohio/Logan), 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).
Marietta plays Stevenson University on Thursday (Mar. 15) at 12:30 p.m.
