HILTON HEAD ISLAND, South Carolina — The Marietta College men's tennis team lost to St. Mary's College of Maryland by the score of 8-1 Tuesday (Mar. 13) evening. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-4 on the season. St. Mary's improves to 3-2 overall.
Marietta's win came at No. 2 singles where
Jack Hirschfield (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) came back from a set down to win the match. St. Mary's Ethan Garren won the first set, 6-0. Hirschfield battled back and took the second set, 7-6 (7-3), forcing the decisive third set. Hirschfield pulled away to win the third set 10-6.
St. Mary's swept the three doubles matches. At No. 1, Garren and Jon Gorel downed Hirschfield and
Shane Spencer (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion), 8-2. James Loftis and Ron Stith defeated
Bryce Emerick (Hyndman, Pa./HOPE for Hyndman Charter) and
Will Watson (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) at No. 2, 8-1.
Brandon DeCicco (Mineral Wells, W.Va./Parkersburg) and
Alex Hogan (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) battled to the end before falling to Jacob Bartholow and Cooper Clark, 9-8 (7-5).
The Seahawks posted straight-set wins in the other five singles matches. Gorel was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Spencer at No. 1. Stith beat Watson at No. 3, 6-1 and 6-0, while Connor McKissick took the No. 4 match against Emerick, 6-0 and 6-0.
At No. 5, Bartholow downed DeCicco, 6-4 and 6-3. Hogan fell to Kyle Van Winter at No. 6, by the same 6-4, 6-3 score.
Marietta plays Stevenson University on Thursday (Mar. 15) at 12:30 p.m.
