Herd scores her 1000th point as #23 Women's Basketball downs Heidelberg 98-64

MARIETTA, Ohio — The No. 23 ranked Marietta College women's basketball team easily defeated visiting Heidelberg University, 98-64, Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers improve to 18-3 overall and 11-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Heidelberg falls to 4-17 on the season and 2-12 in conference play.

Senior Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) hit a jumper midway through the third quarter to become the tenth player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points. Herd finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) led the Pioneers with 21 points. Shay Lett (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) added 19 points and four assists, while Laura Pullins (Long Bottom, Ohio/Reedsville Eastern) chipped in with 14 points. Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) grabbed eight boards to tie Herd for the game-high in rebounds.

Alyssa Riley drained four three-pointers and finished with 18 points to pace the Student Princes. Aianna Wilson had 12 points and six rebounds. Megan Siesel added 10 points and six boards, while Brittanie Ulmer notched 10 points.

After tading small leads in the early going, Marietta opened an 11-point lead, 24-13, early in the second quarter. Heidelberg responded with a 14-2 run to take a one-point advantage, 27-26, with five minutes left in the first half.

Lett nailed one of her five triples o the ensuing possession to put the Pioneers in front for good. Marietta led 42-35 at halftime.

The Pioneers pulled away in the third quarter and held a 22-point lead, 71-49, heading into the final 10 minutes of play. Marietta extended the lead to as many as 35 points in the fourth quarter allowing Coach Kole Vivian to clear his bench.

For the game, Marietta shot 47.8% (33-of-69) from the floor, 44.0% (11-of-25) from three-point range and 65.6% (21-of-32) at the free throw line. The Student Princes were 22-of-66 (33.3%) from the floor, 9-of-24 (37.5%) from behind the arc and 11-of-18 (61.1%) at the line.

The Pioneers edged Heidelberg on the glass, 45-42. Marietta turned the ball over eight times, while Heidelberg committed 19 turnovers.

Marietta hosts Capital University on Wednesday (Feb. 7). Tip off in Ban Johnson Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
