Women's Basketball downs Capital 80-67

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team tied the program record for Ohio Athletic Conference wins in a season with an 80-67 victory over Capital University Wednesday (Feb. 7) evening in Ban Johnson Arena.

With the win, Marietta moves to 12-3 in the OAC and 19-3 overall. Capital falls to 12-10 on the season and 8-7 in conference play.

"We didn't do a very good job of anything in the first half. Our effort on the glass wasn't very good and we were pretty fortunate to only be down by nine points," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "The second half we decided to make a change and it made all the difference. Our energy picked up and we started moving the ball better."

Brooke Borich (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) led four Pioneers in double figures with 21 points. Corrie Burkhardt (Zanesville, Ohio/Philo) scored 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Jenna Andersen (Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) added 15 points and four boards, while Amisha Herd (Zanesville, Ohio/West Muskingum) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. Herd also had five rebounds and eight steals.

"Jenna was huge all night. She anchored us down low. Corrie brings so much energy with her play and had an outstanding second half," Vivian said. "Amisha was asked to do a lot with chasing their point guard all over the place and getting us into the offense. That might have been the best game she's ever played and that is saying something. And Brooke did a great job leading us in scoring. We needed her to step up and make some shots and she responded like a senior."

Elle Folan hit four three-pointers and led the Crusaders with 16 points. Erin Risner finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Carlie Hulette added 12 points.

Capital had the hot hand in the first two quarters and led 18-12 after the first and 35-26 at halftime. The Crusaders shot 53% from the floor in the first 20 minutes while Marietta got off to a slow start hitting just 1-of-9 from three-point range in the first half.

The Pioneers regrouped at halftime and outscored Capital 26-13 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Marietta led 52-48 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Pioneers got a three-pointer from Laura Pullins (Long Bottom, Ohio/Reedsville Eastern) and a layup from Burkhardt to start the fourth quarter pushing the margin to nine points, 57-48. Capital would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

For the game, Marietta shot 42.4% (28-of-66) from the floor, 34.6% (9-of-26) from three-point range and 75.0% (15-of-20) at the line. The Crusaders were 29-of-61 (47.5%) from the floor, 5-of-12 (41.7%) behind the arc and 4-of-6 (66.7%) at the line.

The Pioneers edged capital on the boards, 39-36. Capital turned the ball over 18 times, while Marietta committed 12 turnovers.

Marietta travels to Wilmington College on Saturday (Feb. 10) for a 3 p.m. game against the Quakers.
