Volleyball stung by Yellow Jackets

BEREA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action Saturday (Oct. 27) as they wrapped up their 2018 regular season against Baldwin Wallace University.  The Pioneers were defeated by the Yellow Jackets, 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-17).

Baldwin Wallace opened the first set on a 12-6 run which forced a Marietta timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Pioneers battled, but were unable to rally and fell, 25-13.

The second set saw Marietta jump out to an early 3-0 lead.  The early run was sparked by kills from Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo) and Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison).  The Yellow Jackets responded to take an 11-5 edge.  Baldwin Wallace was able to win the second set, 25-10.

The Pioneers were able to grab a 4-1 lead to open the third set, behind a pair of service aces from Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Barnes.  The Yellow Jackets were able to battle back and tie the game at eight points apiece.  The third set remained deadlocked at 10-10, before Marietta rattled off three quick points.  The Pioneers surge was led by a kill from Arrowood and Maris Kaiser (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy).  The Yellow Jackets responded to take the lead, and won the third and final set, 25-17.

The Marietta offense was led by Arrowood as she had four kills, and three block assists.  Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) and Barnes each pitched in with three kills in the match.

Defensively, the Pioneers were led by Nader as she had 12 digs, and 11 assists in the match.  April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) pitched in with 12 digs in the match.  Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) added 10 digs to the Pioneers defense.

Marietta will return to the court Tuesday (Oct. 30) when they compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) tournament quarterfinals.
