MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action Saturday (Oct. 20) afternoon when they hosted Ohio Athletic Conference opponent John Carroll University in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers were defeated by the Blue Streaks, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-12).
The opening set saw Marietta grab a 3-1 lead behind a pair of kills from
Amanda Arrowood (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Groveport Madison) and
Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo). John Carroll responded to tie the game at five points apiece and went on to take a 14-5 advantage. The Pioneers were unable to muster a first set rally and fell, 25-14.
The second set opened with Marietta ahead 7-3. The Pioneers were sparked by kills from Barnes,
Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace), and a service ace from
Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion). The Blue Streaks rallied and tied the set at 7-7. The middle of the second set was a back and forth battle as the match was tied 12 times and remained deadlocked at 21 points apiece. After a John Carroll timeout, the Blue Streaks scored the final four points and won the second set, 25-21.
John Carroll opened the third set on a 13-2 run that forced a Marietta timeout. Out of the timeout, the Blue Streaks were able to maintain their advantage, and won the third and final set, 25-12.
The Pioneers offense was led by Barnes as she had seven kills and a block assist in the match. Arrowood pitched in with five kills, and a game high three block assists.
Defensively, Marietta was led by
April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) as she had a game high 16 digs.
Abbi Thompson (Commercial Point, Ohio/Teays Valley) added 10 digs to the Pioneers defense. Nader had a game high 23 assists, as well as seven digs, and a service ace in the match.
Marietta will return to the court Tuesday (Oct. 23) to take on OAC opponent Muskingum University, with the game scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
