Volleyball stumbles against Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team was in action Tuesday (Oct. 23) evening as they traveled to face Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opponent Muskingum University.  The Pioneers were defeated by Muskingum, 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-17).  

The first set opened as Muskingum grabbed a 10-4 edge, which forced a Marietta timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Pioneers were able to cut into the Muskingum lead with three straight kills from Alissa Ginther (Beverly, Ohio/Fort Frye) and Brooke Trimble (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay).  Marietta battled until the end of the set, but fell 25-14.  

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the second set of the match.  The Marietta offense was led by Maddie Nader (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion) and Ginther, as they each had kills.  Muskingum responded to take a 14-11 lead which forced a Pioneers timeout.  Out of the timeout, Muskingum stretched its lead and won the second set, 25-13.  

Marietta opened the third set with a 5-2 lead, and maintained a 7-5 edge.  The early set spark was provided by kills from Sam Ritenour (Jeffersonville, Ohio/Miami Trace) and Hunter Barnes (Duncan Falls, Ohio/Philo).  Muskingum battled back and took a 12-8 advantage, which forced a Pioneers timeout.  Marietta was unable to regain the lead, and lost the third and final set, 25-17.  

The Pioneers were led by Ginther as she had 10 kills in the match.  Barnes pitched in with eight kills, five digs, and a block assist in the match.  

April Davis (Aurora, Ohio/Aurora) led the Marietta defense, as she had 13 digs in the match.  Braya Elsea (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) added eight digs, and a pair of assists in the match for the Pioneers.  Nader had a team high 22 assists, and six digs in the match.    

Marietta will be back in action Friday (Oct. 26) when they host Hiram College on Senior night at 7 p.m.
